In the spring of 1853, Captain Vanderbilt went to a tourist resort in New York for vacation. One day, at dinner, he complained to the cook that the potato chips were too thick. The chef decided to play a trick on Vanderbilt by cutting the potatoes into paper-thin slices, frying them in hot oil, and then topping them with dressing. He wanted to make a joke, but the captain praised it as delicious, so it became today’s traditional sliced potato chips.
